Landscapes that work for patients and staff

Patients have enough on their minds. Tripping over a sprinkler head shouldn't be one of them.

The anchor here is Dignity Health's Mercy Gilbert Medical Center at 3555 S Val Vista Dr, which opened in 2006. A 2017 Town planning memo noted that the hospital, southeast of the Val Vista and Loop 202 interchange, had spurred growth around it. Medical offices, clinics and care facilities have followed. Their landscapes have one job above looking nice: get people from the car to the door safely, often with walkers, wheelchairs or a sick kid in tow.

So we focus on the paths. Shrubs get trimmed back from sidewalks and ramps. Low branches come up over walkways and drop-off lanes. Sprinkler heads near walks get checked so they aren't spraying people or leaving slick spots. Granite gets raked back off the concrete. None of it is fancy, but it's what patients and staff notice when it's missing. We also keep entry signs and wayfinding clear of overgrown plants, so first-time visitors can find the right door.

Shade matters too. A healthy tree canopy over parking and entries makes a summer appointment a lot easier. We prune for structure and clearance, keep an eye on stressed trees and water deeply rather than often, so roots grow down instead of lifting your sidewalks. After a monsoon storm, we check for broken limbs over walks and parking and clear them quickly. Nobody wants to park under a hanging branch.
